N.F.Cobbold, North Hill Brewery, 34 North Hill, Colchester, Essex.

The brewery site was bounded by North Hill and Balkon Lane and in its earliest days was partly surrounded by orchards, pastures and remnants of the old city wall.

There were two maltings incorporated within the brewery complex, as was the owners house and offices which faced onto North Hill at its lower end, close to the cattle market. The extant Marquis of Granby public house stands immediately opposite the brewery yard entrance. Charles Cobbold commenced brewing c.1823, but on his death his widow, Mrs Cobbold traded from 1826 to 1827.

By 1839, the title had changed to R.Cobbold and Company (Brewers), who were also listed as maltster.

In 1843, Messrs John Cobbold and Robert Knipe Cobbold, commissioned the local surveyor, W.A. Bowler, to draw plans of the brewery and the entire tied estate. A Directory entry for 1850 lists the business as Cobbold and Company (brewers and maltster), again similarly in 1855.

In 1859 the two brothers incorporated their full names in the title name.

By 1880 the brothers brewing interests split, forming the Ipswich, Suffolk brewery, see:- Cobbold & Co. Ltd.

In 1883, C Stopes and Sons of the Eagle Brewery, Colchester, purchased the concern in order to reduce competition.

The premises have been demolished.
