Leicester Brewing & Malting Co Ltd, Eagle Brewery, 51 Upper Charnwood Street, Leicester, Leicestershire
In 1827, Henry Bates was at the Rainbow & Dove, Northampton Square.
In 1864, T C Carver & Co were operating the Northampton Street brewery; and around 1867, Carver & Bates were shown at the Eagle Brewery, Northampton Square. The Charnwood Street area was developed in 1870; the Eagle Brewery at Charnwood Street was built from 1876 onwards.
In 1877, Frederick Bates was shown as a brewer at 15 Northampton Street, and at the Eagle Brewery, Upper Charnwood Street. By 1880, Frederick Bates had become Bates, Son & Bishell, Northampton and Lower Charnwood Streets.
On 30 June 1890, Bates, Son & Bishell registered the Leicester Brewing & Malting Co Ltd together with the malting business of Needham & Crick, Church Gate, Leicester.
Acquired by Ansells Brewery Ltd in 1952 with about 140 public houses and brewing ceased. Bottling continued to 1960.
Most buildings remain. The surviving buildings are successively dated: 1876, 1890, 1924 and 1938.
