Founded 1879 at South Street.

Buchanan acquired the Hanover Square brewery from Robert Fletcher's exors in 1883. Sold 15 houses in 1927 and leased the brewery to the Northern Clubs Federation Brewery Ltd who then exercised an option to purchase in 1929.

Federation moved to Dunston in 1980.
