This ancient former posting house possibly had a brewery in the 18th century.

There are two Parlours, two Kitchens, a good Bar-Room, a large Brewing-Office, and exceeding good Cellars, a Wash house, Stables for about 30 Horses, and a good Piece of Garden Ground. Further information may be had of Mr. Jonathan Hawes of Sudbury or of Street Elliston of Ixworth (where he previously ran the Pickerel)". (Ipswich Journal, October 10th 1767)

The pub was later owned by Mauldon & Son.
