Matthew Smith, Queens Cross Brewery

Matthew Smith, Queens Cross Brewery, Blowers Hill Road, Queens Cross, Dudley, West Midlands
The Queens Cross Brewery was built c.1872 by Matthew Smith at the rear of the Lamp Tavern, 116 High Street, Dudley. This was a 10-quarter brewery producing 500 barrels of beer a week. It was also known as the Dudley Hop Ale Brewery, since it brewed a non-alcoholic sweet bottled beverage of that name.
Matthew Smith died in 1914, aged 82, and the plant was for sale 14th July 1915 as 1 Blowers Green Road. It was run by his executors until sold to H & B Woodhouse in 1917. Woodhouse brewed here until 1934, when they ceased brewing. They had 15 public houses. The brewery was leased to Francis Billingham of Netherton and during WW2 was used as stores by Hancocks of Cardiff.
Bathams acquired the premises in October 1950. The Lamp Tavern continues as a thriving Bathams' pub. The former brewery operates as a function room and music venue.
