Barge Inn Brewery, Tattershall Road and Norfolk Street, Boston, Lincolnshire

George Ward was listed at The Barge near Grand Sluice in 1833 and was shown as a retail brewer in 1842. James Smith, a draper, was trading in what had become known as The Wards Hotel in 1855 to 1864, when the hotel and its 6- or 7-quarter brewery (described as the Witham Brewery) were offered for sale at auction, James Smith having died on 14 April. The brewery was bought by William Wright who may have rented the brewery before that. He was advertising X, XX. XXX and XA in 1864. William Wright & Co. were trading from 1869 to 1872 (Witham Brewery) and 29 Market Place (wine & spirit merchants).

The Witham Brewery and The Barge were offered to let in 1872. In 1875/77, Joseph & Walter Albert Parker were in occupation. In 1877, the brewery was offered to let with The Barge, and seems to have been in the ownership of J H Wright of Old Leake. The property was offered again in 1878. William Meeds was shown in a directory of 1882 at 19 Witham Place and listed in Kellys Directory of 1889 as a brewer but he was declared bankrupt in 1891 and the “extensive brewery” and The Barge were offered for sale.

On 14 November 1898 the brewing plant of the Barge Brewery was offered for sale, with G H Browne Ltd. shown as the owners. The premises were converted into flats.
