William Birchnell (Mrs)
Mrs William Birchnell, Sutton Lodge Brewery, Brughton Astley, Leicestershire.
In July 1812, Sutton House, with its domestic brewhouse, was to let from Mr Boultbee. Around this time, a Mr Sutton was looking to sell a 12 quarter malt office near to the church. Robert Birchnall was a farmer, grazier and maltster in 1846.
The first mention of brewing on a large scale was in 1855, when William Birchnell was listed for Sutton Lodge, as a farmer and brewer through to 1871. However, some directories only show William Birchnall as a farmer at Sutton in Elms, with no mention of brewing. Robert Birchnall was a farmer, grazier and maltster in 1846.
In 1876, Mrs William Birchnell was shown as the brewer at Sutton Lodge, and again the following year (F809). However, White’s directory for that year lists Mrs Mary Ann Burchnall as the farmer and brewer at Sutton Lodge, Broughton Astley.
By 1884 William was listed only as a farmer.
The farm is still standing, but with no sign of a brewhouse.
