Brewery founded c.1840 next to the Borough Arms.
Owned by the Markham and Smee families. Purchased by Alfred Richardson in 1855.
Sold to John Huntley in 1885 then to Richard William Flick late of the Horse Shoe Brewery, Banbury in 1898 (see Zeph Brown).
Registered in 1906 as Charles Brown & Sons Ltd to acquire his business in Witham, Hatfield Peverel and Maldon.
Failed to sell at auction in 1913.
Brewing had ceased by 1929.
