The brewery was built in the 1840's with the Borough Arms public house adjacent, and was in the ownership of the Markham and Smee families.

Alfred Richardson purchased the buildings in 1855 and commenced his brewing from there. In the Essex Almanac for 1874, Richardson placed an advertisement soliciting further trade. He sold the brewery to John Hutley in 1885, his profession was a well-borer, living in Wantz Road.

Continuing the varied ownership of the business, Harry William Treacher purchased the brewery, but soon sold this to R.W.Flick, but still trading as The Wantz Brewery up to 1900. For the next two years A.H.Crawford was the brewer, finally being listed in Kelly's Directory in 1902, the address given as 137, Wantz Road. The trading name was then for the next four years known simply as the Wantz Brewery Company, it then became a limited liability company for four years.

Charles Brown was the last owner of the Wantz Brewery (this may well have been the Charles Brown & Sons Ltd of the Hatfield Peverel Brewery), he continued brewing until 1929, at which time the brewery closed.
