Thomas Beddall Newman was a master builder and brewer, first recorded in 1848, also later noted as a maltster in 1853 and 1878. He owned 17 acres of land at Great Sampford. He was probably related to the Newman's brewing at near by Rayne and at the Wethersfield Brewery, there was also listed a Thomas B. Newman in 1914.

In the Directory for 1878, Thomas Beddall Newman, was listed as a brewer and maltster, also secretary of the Bardfield Literary Institution, the family house being recorded as North Place.
