Founded by John Payne in 1977 at [[Bell's Diner]], York Road, Montpelier.

A management buyout in 1991 resulted in the company rapidly expanding to own 17 public houses. Most of these pubs have now been sold as the business once more concentrated on brewing. Taken over again in late 2003. Underwent a restructuring late in 2004 which resulted in brewing being contracted out by a new Smiles Brewing Co Ltd to [[Highgate & Walsall Brewery Co. Ltd]].
