In December 2004, following receivership, the pub estate was separated from the brewery. The much scaled down operation will serve the Bristol market. However, the main brands will be produced under licence at [[Highgate & Walsall Brewery Co. Ltd]] in Walsall.
A management buyout in 1991 resulted in the company rapidly expanding to own 17 public houses. Most of these pubs have now been sold as the business once more concentrated on brewing. Taken over again in late 2003. Underwent a restructuring late in 2004 which resulted in brewing being contracted out by a new Smiles Brewing Co Ltd to [[Highgate & Walsall Brewery Co. Ltd]].  


The brewing equipment was removed from the old Brewery Tap which is now owned by [[Butcombe Brewery]].
