The Robert Cain Brewery, Mersey Brewery, Stanhope Street, Toxteth, Liverpool, Merseyside
Following the closure of Higson's Brewery Ltd at the Mersey Brewery, the brewery (which had been modernised by Boddingtons) was acquired by 'GB Breweries' in 1990. During the period 1991-1992, the company was acquired by Brewery Group Denmark AS (the makers of Faxe Lager). At this time, it was trading as Robert Cain & Co Ltd, and the Robert Cain Brewery Ltd.
In 2002, Brewery Group Denmark sold the brewery to Ajmail and Sudarghara Dusanj who started to acquire a small estate of pubs locally. In 2007, they acquired Honeycombe Leisure plc with an estate of 109 pubs, and the company was renamed Cains Beer Company plc.
The company was in administration in 2008, but the Dusanj Brothers bought back the brewery and eight local pubs.
It is thought that brewing ceased in about 2013, although there are plans to begin brewing at a microbrewery at the site. Planning permission has been granted for a new tourism, leisure and retail attraction known as Cains Brewery Village.
