Following the closure of Higson's Brewery Ltd at the Mersey Brewery, the brewery (which had been modernised by Boddingtons) was acquired by 'GB Breweries' in 1990. During the period 1991-1992, the company was acquired by Brewery Group Denmark AS (the makers of Faxe Lager). At this time, it was trading as Robert Cain & Co Ltd, and the Robert Cain Brewery Ltd.
In 2002, Brewery Group Denmark sold the brewery to Ajmail and Sudarghara Dusanj who started to aquire a small estate of pubs locally. In 2007, they acquired Honeycombe Leisure plc with and estate of 109 pub, and the company was renamed Cains Beer Company plc.
