Robert Cain & Sons Ltd, Mersey Brewery, Stanhope Street, Toxteth, Liverpool, Merseyside.

Founded 1848 when Robert Cain brewed at a pub in Limekiln Lane and around 1859 at 2 Islington Row. He was listed in Stanhope Street in 1862 possibly from Hyde & Rust.

Private company registered December 1896 with 200 tied houses and brewery rebuild finished by 1902. The rebuild presumably included the nearby site of Clegg & Wright which they had bought.

Merged with Walkers of Warrington with 345 houses in September 1921 to form Peter Walker & Robert Cain Ltd, then to become Walker Cain Ltd and brewing was concentrated at Warrington in 1923.

In 1923, the Mersey Brewery was sold to Higson's Brewery Ltd.

Following the closure of Higson's Brewery at the site, a later Robert Cain Brewery was established in 1990.
