The Oakham Brewery, with a 10 barrel plant, was founded in October 1993 on a small industrial estate near the station. The founder was John Wood, formerly employed as a computer project manager.
In 1995 it was bought by Paul Hook, the owner of the converted barge Charter’s Bar in Peterborough. John Bryan was employed as the brewer at Oakham, and the business expanded into the next door business unit. The addition of another fermenting vessel and 6 conditioning tanks, doubled the capacity to 30 barrels per week.
The beers were supplied to Charters and the Flower and Firkin pub in Peterborough, together with some 60+ free trade outlets in the East Midlands and East Anglia.
In 1998 the brewing plant was moved to a former unemployment office on Westgate in Peterborough. The new site was a US inspired brew-pub known as The Brewery Tap. With its 35 barrel plant, this is one of the largest brew-pubs in UK.
Ceased here in 1998 when brewery moved to Peterborough.

Brewing commenced at Westgate in 1998. The conversion of a former employment exchange, this is a large brewpub, with the brewery prominently located behind glass walls. Following the opening of the brewery at Maxwell Road, it is thought that this brewery is not now normally used.
