James Thorougood took over the Packet House Inn, with its small brewery. In the 1870s he built the Royal Hotel.
They became "& Son" in 1892 and merged with T W Thorougood Ltd of Liverpool in 1896 to form Thorougood's Breweries Ltd.
The brewery built 1893 was offered for sale in July 1922. The building was on the canal side behind the Packet House Inn.
