Greenall Whitley & Co. Ltd, Wilderspool Brewery, Wilderspool Causeway, Warrington, Cheshire


Founded 1762 at St Helens. This brewery was closed in April 1975. See Greenall Whitley (St Helens).

The Warrington (Wilderspool) brewery was established in 1787. See Greenall Whitley (Wilderspool).

Private company registered in October 1880 and public company formed 1952.

In 1951, it acquired Shrewsbury & Wem Brewery Co. Ltd: brewing ceased here in February 1988.

In 1961, it acquired Groves & Whitnall Ltd of Salford: brewing ceased here in March 1972.

In 1978, it acquired Shipstone & Sons Ltd of Nottingham.

In July 1985, it acquired J. P. Simpkiss of Brierley Hill and immediately closed the brewery.

In 1990, it closed its remaining breweries at Warrington and Nottingham to become a pub chain, which was later itself bought.
