George Withers, The Griffin, 67 Ashby Place, Loughborough, Leicestershire.

In 1809, the address of the Griffin was shown as Bear Place, when it was bought for £600 by a Mr Cradock, with John Kiddier as the tenant. However, in 1811, the old Griffin was for sale having closed. This was followed by the sale of its brewing vessels. William Bryan was the owner at the time. On 16th March 1812, the new Griffin at the bottom of Mill Street on Ashby Road was for sale. The sale, which included the brewhouse, was a result of the tenant John Kidger leaving the business, possibly because of bankruptcy. Details were available from a Richard Attenborough, a maltster on Baxtergate.

By 1870 George Withers was at the pub and was identified as the brewer for the period 1877-87. The windows are etched with Marston’s Horninglow Brewery and since they moved to the Albion Brewery in 1902, this gives both an indication of by when they had bought the pub and the possible rarity of the windows.

It is still a Marston’s house.
