THE EXE VALLEY BREWERY by Guy Sheppard

Formally Barron Brewery, established in 1984 by Richard Barron. Richard had previously been landlord of the Three Tuns, Silverton. He converted a redundant cow shed into the brewery (doing a lot of the work himself). By 1991 trade had expanded too much for one person to manage alone and extra help was needed or the brewery would have to close. Thus in 1991 Guy Sheppard joined and the name was changed to Exe Valley Brewery.

Guy Sheppard had opted out of accountancy after graduating at Exeter University; set up the wholesale brewers' agents business of Sheppard & Mason in 1977 which was sold in 1991.

Until March 1994 we had been using the original equipment, new plant was installed and officially opened by our MP, Mrs Angela Browning in June 1994 during our 10th anniversary celebrations. The brewery can now produced up to 60 barrels per week (over 17,000 pints).

Currently 4 regular beers are produced:-

  • Exe Valley Bitter 3.7%
  • Dob's Best Bitter 4.1%
  • Devon GIory 4.7%
  • Exeter Old Bitter 4.3%

We also produce seasonal beers with styles appropriate to the time of year. We use our own spring water, Devon malt & hops with no additives.

Exeter Old Bitter was First in its class ( Strong Bitters ) at The Great British Beer Festival, Olympia 1993. Dob's Best Bitter won a 3rd Prize at The Great British Beer Festival, Olympia 1992.

Local pubs are supplied direct within a 25 mile radius of the brewery and our beers are available nationally via wholesalers.
