John Bowden founded the Royal Brewery in Fulham Road during the mid-nineteenth century. The business was moved to Chelsea in the 1880s and the brewery was renamed the Royal Chelsea Brewery.

Registered in 1897 as the Chelsea Brewery Co. Ltd to acquire Bowden & Co. The company took over Smith’s Welch Ale Brewery Ltd, Old Kent Road, in 1900 and changed its name to the Welch Ale Brewery Ltd.

Acquired by Watney, Combe, Reid & Co. Ltd. with 80 houses in 1920. In 1924 converted into a wine and spirits department as the Cremorne Gate Cellars.

Buildings remain.
