The Open Hand trademark was registered by Samuel [[Allsopp & Sons Ltd]] of Burton upon Trent in 1876, but it had already been in use at any earlier date. Following the merger with [[Ind Coope Ltd]] in June 1934, the subsequent company continued to use the trademark, and when former Ind Coope pubs became a management sector of Allied Breweries, the 'Hand' became widely used, particularly mounted in the ironwork of inn sign brackets.
