Flower's Breweries Ltd (formerly J W Green Ltd), Phoenix Brewery, Park Street West, Luton, Bedfordshire
Founded by Henry and Frederick Pearman in 1857 and sold to John William Green in 1869. Registered in September 1897 as J W Green Ltd.
Acquisition and Closure Trail:
- Luton Brewery Co. Ltd. Acquired 1898.
- Glover & Sons Ltd of Harpenden. Acquired by J W Green Ltd in 1919 with 19 of their public houses and was closed.
- W & S Lucas Ltd, Hitchin, Hertfordshire. Acquired in 1920 with 52 tied houses. Closed 1923 and brewery demolished 1963.
- Morris & Co. (Ampthill) Ltd. Acquired in 1926 with 72 tied houses and closed.
- Adey & White Ltd, St Albans. Acquired by J W Green Ltd in May 1936 with 56 public houses and was closed in July of that year. Most of the buildings were demolished.
- E. & H. Kelsey Ltd, Tunbridge Wells. Acquired in 1948 with 84 tied houses. Brewing ceased end June 1955.
- J & J E Phillips Ltd, Royston, Hertfordshire. Acquired in 1949 with 150 tied houses. The brewery was later used by a wholesale confectionery manufacturer and then demolished. Now a supermarket.
- Soulby, Sons & Winch Ltd, Anchor Brewery, Alford, Lincolnshire. Acquired in 1951 with 144 tied houses and brewing ceased 1952.
- Fenwick & Co. Ltd of Sunderland. Acquired by George Younger & Son Ltd in 1898 and was sold to J W Green Ltd. with 101 houses in 1952.
- Mowbray & Co. Ltd, Grantham Brewery. Acquired in March 1952 with 200 tied houses. Brewing ceased in 1964.
- E K & H Fordham Ltd, Ashwell, Hertfordshire. Acquired in 1952 with 91 public houses and became a bottling stores which was closed in 1965. Flats and houses built on the site 1969.
- Flower & Sons Ltd, Stratford-upon-Avon. Acquired by J W Green Ltd in 1954 who then changed their name to Flowers Breweries Ltd.
Takeover by Whitbread:
Acquired by Whitbread & Co. Ltd in 1961. The Phoenix Brewery was closed 1969 when Whitbread's giant new brewery in Oakley Road Whitbread Luton, was opened (this in turn being closed in 1984).
