Carlisle Old Brewery Co. Ltd

Carlisle Old Brewery (Sir Richard Hodgson & Co. Ltd), Bridge Street, Carlisle, Cumbria.

Founded in 1756. Main brewhouse built in 1894.

In 1916, the Government took over the pubs and breweries in Carlisle, due to the production of armaments in the area supplying explosives and shells to the British Army in the First World War. All brewing was centred on the Old Brewery, and three other Carlisle breweries were closed: Carlisle New Brewery Co. Ltd, Graham & Sons (Queens Brewery), and Iredale's High Brewery.

Used as the State Management brewery until 1973 and was bought by Theakston Ltd in 1974. Theakstons were then acquired by Matthew Brown of Blackburn.

Closed by Matthew Brown in Spring 1987; brewing was transferred to Workington. The brewery was converted to student accommodation.
