William Whitmarsh bought William Jepson's Free Trade Brewery in 1852 and built the South Street Brewery on the site.
In about 1891, they acquired John Watson's Spring Lane Brewery. Registered October 1895 with a total of 140 houses.
Acquired by Duncan Gilmour & Co. Ltd. in 1906 and brewing ceased 1915.
