William Whitaker & Co. Ltd, Old Brewery, Brewery Street & Thornton Road, Bradford, West Yorkshire.
Founded 1757. Brewing was started by Joseph Stoney and Thomas Aked. John Whitaker acquired the brewery on 31 March 1763. Originally at Horton Road, later Great Horton Road. In 1861 they built grand entrance to the brewery yard off Thornton Road. Registered November 1897.
Brewing ceased 1928 and the brewery was sold to a cinema company for the construction of the New Victoria cinema. From this time, Whitakers bought all their draught beer from Tetleys. Their pubs began to display the Tetley Huntsman signs, but they did not carry the slogan "One of Tetley's Houses". They moved their business headquarters to their stables and garages at Park Road, Bradford. From there they continued as hotel proprietors, bottlers, dealers in beer, wines, spirits and tobacco. That continued until 1 October 1959 when the business was acquired by Joshua Tetley & Son Ltd with 119 houses which were then incorporated into the Tetley estate.
