Truman, Hanbury & Buxton & Co. Ltd, Black Eagle Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, Spitalfields, London E1

The Black Eagle Brewery was built by Thomas Bucknall in about 1666 and it was acquired by Joseph Truman in 1679. Registered in January 1889.

In order to brew the increasingly popular 'pale ales', the company acquired Phillips Bros Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent in 1873. They rebuilt the brewery and brewed there until 1971. See Truman, Hanbury, Buxton (Burton).

Acquired by Grand Metropolitan Hotels Ltd in 1971 and was merged with Watney Mann Ltd in 1974. Name changed to Truman Ltd in 1971. Brewing ceased in 1989. The site remains an assortment of commercial buildings.

The brewery features in The Noted Breweries of Great Britain and Ireland by Alfred Barnard published 1890.
