Founded 1777 and operated by George Gates until October 1886 when the Star Brewery Company was formed to acquire the business of William Alexander Cardwell, a partner in Hurst and Co..
Acquired the Golden Hop Brewery in 1886.
Acquired by Courage, Barclay & Simonds Ltd. 1965 with 43 tied houses.
Brewing ceased 1967 and the main brewhouse built 1876 was demolished in 1971.
