SCANLON’S BREWERY by Jerry Scanlon

As a BHS member I have read about many micro breweries in the Journal over the years. So it seems like natural progression for me to make the big decision and start one of my own.

Sited in an industrial unit in Yiewsley, Middlesex, the plant was built by Mike Askey of the Bitter End and has a 2.5 barrel capacity.

Even before the plant was operational my first brew "Scanlon's Spike", after the hedgehog and at 4.5% abv, was brewed under contract by the Rebellion Beer Company at Marlow.

Spike was first unleashed on the drinkers of the Home Counties in October 1995. Since then it has grown in popularity and is currently sold in 39 pubs in the 5 counties, plus about 20 others nationwide, including Scotland. It also made an appearance at the "Friendly Bombs Beer Festival" at Slough, earlier this year as well as Ealing, Catford, Doncaster and Milton Keynes.

I am in the process of running some trial brews through the new plant in the hope that I can switch production of Spike to Yiewsley by Christmas. My first brew there was “Middlesex Gold” launched on 8th May, 1996. It is golden in colour, very hoppy and weighs in at 3.8% abv.

In the meanwhile I have added "Colne Valley Bitter" to my range and I hope to have this in the pubs by the time you read this article.
