He purchased Meiklejohn's brewery in Alloa around (or soon after) that firm went out of their family and the business moved to the Grange in Alloa, on the site of another distillery with an interesting history.

He renamed the brewery as the Bass Crest Brewery - that is where he came into conflict with Bass of Burton over names and trademarks.

Incidentally - one of the extended Maitland family in the USA married Curtis Le May who would become head of the US Air Force. A controversial figure.

Robert Meiklejohn & Son, 27 St.Enoch Square, Glasgow, Strathclyde.

Trading in 1887. Acquired by Maclachlans Ltd in 1923.
