Joint Society Social Meeting: Red Lion, Histon, Cambridge, July 1999

Report and photos by Jeff Sechiari

On the day we had glorious weather and were lucky to be able to use the marquee which had been set up in the pub's spacious garden for a week long charity beer festival that had just finished. This meant that there one or two beers still available from the festival to supplement the pub's own range of cask ales. Just once in a while you do land on your feet.

There was a wide range of stalls including our own book shop, ably manned by Ken Smith, Ruth Minett and, not so ably, myself (well I had never done it before, I will think of bringing a float along next time); These included: the Association of Bottled Beer Collectors, the Labologists Society, and the British Brewery Playing Card Society; and many private stalls. There were also an awful lot of people there to enjoy the day and snap up the breweriana.

Our very great thanks to our host Mark Donachy and family and staff who were absolutely exhausted after the week long beer festival on top of a full week's work.

We took a leisurely amble back home visiting the centre of Cambridge to see the architecture, Barley in Hertfordshire to see the famous Fox & Hounds pub sign spanning the road and Ware to see the brewery building remains - and the inside of an Italian restaurant. Just one of those great days.
