A conveyance dated 29th July, 1813, from William Benson to Oliver Gosling indicates that brewing was taking place prior to 1813. By 1839 Oliver was joined by John Gosling and they jointly traded as brewers and maltsters up into 1882, when Oliver Gosling was recorded as sole brewer at the Bocking Brewery, last listed in 1902.

Greene King & Sons Ltd of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, purchased the concern on 14th October, 1904, and brewing continued until the outbreak of World War II in 1939. Included in the purchase were thirteen licensed houses. The premises are still in use by Greene King and Sons as a distribution depot and wine centre, trading as "Peatlings". To the rear of the yard there are the old stables, whilst the two fine buildings fronting onto Bradford Street remain.
