Old Brewery (Lichfield)

An advert from 1904

Dawes Brothers, Old Brewery, 28/30 Sandford Street, Lichfield, Staffordshire.

In November 1889 Harold Jackson, many years at Burton, bought from the trustees of J & A Griffith.

Jackson retired in 1896 and it was bought by his employee James S Oldham, then joined by J D Langworthy, see Dawes Brothers.

In 1906 trading as Sydney Oldham & Co. However, in February 1908 for sale L R Scott.

Bought c.1909 by Edwin Dawes of Long Sutton and listed in 1917.

Edwin died 6th July 1921.

Steve Baker writes:-

The brewery appears to have been in existence in 1834, when operated by John Holmes. By 1842, Thomas Willdey was the proprietor.

In 1880, John Delane and Thomas Arthur Griffith had taken over the brewery, and they operated it as an offshoot to their wine and spirit business, which was started in 1841; they traded as J.D. & T.A. Griffith. The Griffith family had previously brewed in Beacon Street, and that business had become the Lichfield Brewery Co. Ltd in 1869.

The next owner seems to be Harold Jackson, between 1887-1896. Sydney Oldham then operated the brewery and the partnership of Oldham & Langworthy traded from 1898 to c1902, followed by Sydney Oldham & Co. See Dawes Brothers.

Oldham & Langworthy brewed the following draught beers:-

John E. Dawes took over from Oldham & Langworthy. Around 1910, the Old Brewery traded as Dawes Bros. and brewing appears to have ceased about 1917.

Davenport's Brewery Ltd of Birmingham used the premises as stores for many years afterwards.
