McGeorge & Heppenstalls Ltd
McGeorge & Heppenstalls Ltd, Albion Brewery, William Street, Newark on Trent, Nottinghamshire.
About 1847, Christopher Heppenstall (1811-1872) acquired land on a newly developed street, William Street, and built a brewery. He was also a maltster. On the corner of Balderton Gate, he built a tap, the Eagle Tavern, plus a house for himself, and four cottages.
After the first Chistopher's death, his nephews and then his great-nephews ran the business, which became Heppenstalls Ltd in 1890.
In 1892, they merged with local wine merchant McGeorge & Sons to become McGeorge & Heppenstalls Ltd. They had premises at 26, then 42 Kirkgate. By 1895, brewing had ceased at the Albion Brewery, and Warwicks & Richardsons Ltd were supplying the beer. The Albion Brewery produced mineral waters for a period.
The mineral water and wines & spirits business were acquired by Warwicks & Richardsons Ltd in 1924, who also leased the pubs.
The Eagle Tavern closed in 1962, but this, Heppenstall's house and the four adjacent cottages all survive. The brewery site has been redeveloped as housing.
