Marton Brewery Co. Ltd, Preston Old Road, Marton, Blackpool, Lancashire

Mike Brown writes:

This brewery stood next to the Boars Head on Preston Old Road. The earliest reference may be that in 1882, Hall & Co were at the Springwell Brewery, Great Marton. It is also worth noting that the nearby Saddle Inn, 286 Whitegate Road, in 1776 had a brewhouse, when run by a Richard Hall and during the period 1852 to 1869, Richard Hill was a maltster in Great Marton.

In 1886 John Thos Bennett was the tenant of the Boars Head, which was owned by the exors of John Lightbound. The next brewer would seem to have been Albert Ashworth.

In June 1903, a partnership was dissolved which had traded as Kay & Taylor of Marton and Blackpool. The Marton Brewery Co. Ltd was registered in July 1905 to buy the business which was then run by Moses Kay. It had capital of only £5,500, presumably a small scale concern. Brewing stopped on 7th December 1910.

In February 1913 the brewery and pub were bought by the Burtonwood Brewery Co.(Forshaws) Ltd. The brewery and Boars Head pub were sold at auction on 17th August 1921 for £8,500 and was bought by JW Adams of Farnworth. Described as substantially build five-storey premises with plant in full working order, for sale as a going concern in consequences of the indifferent health of the Blackpool manager and for family reasons.

The brewery was demolished in 1922 for the entrance to Royal Bank Road.

There was also a malt house on the edge of the Green, which was demolished in 1900, the site now being Oxford Square.

The Boars Head was rebuilt in the 1930s and is still trading. Our records for Joshua Tetley & Son Ltd indicate that the Boars Head was one of a number of pubs acquired from Burtonwood Brewery in January 1949.
