James Kershaw & Sons Ltd, Askew Road, Gateshead.

Branch Works, Plantation Street, Leadgate, near Consett.

Established in 1878 by James Kershaw (d. 1906, aged 65 years, leaving the business to his family). Incorporated as a private Limited Company in 1907. Directors: John James Kershaw (Leadgate Works), Arthur Robert Kershaw (GatesheadWorks ), Wilfred Gladstone Kershaw, Walter Ridley Kershaw (Secretary).

The Founder commenced business by making, and selling in cask, herb beer, which he carried on his back; he then bought a hand barrow, and afterwards a pony. Now own over 30 horses and waggons and extended their buildings four times.

Premises originally at Strawberry Lane, Newcastle; removed to Bird in Bush Yard, a larger building, in 1878, and to Askew Road, where the present extensive premises were opened in 1881.

Specialist in aerated Waters of all kinds, including Dry Ginger Ale and Dry Kola.

Wholesale Bottlers and Agents for the North of Combe's London Ales and Stouts.

Awards: Eight Medals at various Exhibitions in England.

The late Mr. James Kershaw was a member of the Council for Gateshead for fifteen years, and until his death. Also Chairman of the Health and Sanitary Committee. He was a Poor Law Guardian and was a member of many other Committees, &c. He was also a Freemason.
