John Smith was brewing his own beer as well as retailing at the Rayleigh Arms public house.

The earliest date at which Mr Smith is recorded as brewing was in 1855, when he was a tenant, the Rt Hon. Robert John Baron Rayleigh, who lived at "Terling Place" who sold the property toInd Coope Ltd., on 21st December, 1923.

The brew house was attached to the rear of the public house.
