An assortment of views of the brewery

Pat Aldabella and Robert Barnard write:-

Peter Tune & Son were brewers c.1868 from the Isle of Axholme and Marshland Brewery. The brewery may have been founded in 1856. Tune continued until January 1884 when “bankruptcy of Thomas Smith otherwise Tune of Crowle, common brewer and farmer, carrying on business as Thomas Tune of Crowle, and lately carrying on business in partnership with Thomas Edward Johnson of the Trent Side Brewery, Gainsborough, as Johnson and Tune. Liabilities £40,000. Property valued at £1,164.15s.” By 1889 the executors of Peter Tune were in control with Thomas Johnson Cranridge as manager.

James Fox and Sons Ltd took over the Isle of Axholme Brewery, Brewery Avenue, by 1896. The firm was registered as a private company in July 1917. Thornas Fox was James's son, apparently they had been active in the South Yorkshire brewing trade since 1872. Thomas & Charles Fox, wine & spirits merchants, took over from Tune's executors c.1885 (this conflicts with the above statement that the executors of Tune were still in control in 1889). Fox's had a wine and spirit business behind the Queens Hotel, Regent Street, Barnsley.
