Isaac Hurst, Black Dog, London Road, Oadby, Leicestershire.

In 1800, the Black Dog and its brewhouse were for sale as a result of the death of the owner Mr Ludlam; however, the address was shown as Harborough Street. It was the oldest pub in the town, dating back to around 1753. It was rebuilt around 1783.

The Smalley family were brewing in the early part of the century and although it was bought in 1835 by William Watts of Leicester (see entry) brewing continued. In the 1840s and 1850s it was run by Peter Howard.

In 1870 Otto Juba was running the pub, but on the death of William Watts in 1875 he was given notice to quit. The pub, with stables and brewhouse was sold on 4th February 1875 to Mr Beales, the manager of the Leicester Racecourse Company. Isaac Hurst took over the pub and for the period 1877 to 1884 was brewing. He was shown as the victualler in 1888. However, in 1884 HP Curtis took over as the tenant.

In 1897, it was bought by the City Brewery Co.(Lichfield) Ltd; hence later passing into the hands of Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries Ltd.

Around 1930, J Stanhope at the pub was also an agent for Frank Myatt Ltd’s brewery at Wolverhampton and the pub on the corner of Albion Street and London Road is still trading as a Banks’ house.
