Greene King & Sons Ltd, Westgate Brewery, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

Registered in June 1887 to acquire:

  • E.Greene & Son, Westgate Brewery, Westgate Street. Founded 1799.
  • F.W.King & Son, St.Edmund's Brewery, Westgate Street. Founded 1868.


History of Acquisitions

  • Elizabeth Raven's brewery (Wethersfield) and 15 tied houses were acquired on 25 November 1901 for £17,000, and that brewery was closed.
  • In 1917, they acquired Clarke Brothers of Bury St Edmunds with 28 public houses and that brewery was closed.
  • The Christmas & Co brewery of Haverhill was acquired in 1918 with 49 public houses. Brewing ceased here in 1924.
  • Oliver Brothers of Sudbury was acquired in 1919 with 51 houses. Brewing ceased here in 1932.
  • In 1925, they acquired Bailey & Tebbutt Ltd of Cambridge with 48 houses. This brewery was closed in 1957.
  • In 1930, they acquired Ogden & Sons of March with 34 houses.
  • Mauldon & Son of Ballingdon was acquired with 28 houses in 1958. This brewery was closed in 1960.
  • In 1961, they acquired Wells & Winch Ltd of Biggleswade with 287 public houses. This brewery was closed in 1997.
  • In 1998, they acquired the pub estate of the former brewer Beard & Co. Ltd of Lewes.
  • Morrell's Brewery Ltd of Oxford closed their brewery in 1998 and sold their estate of about 107 pubs to Greene King in 2002.
  • They acquired Ridley & Sons Ltd of Hartford End in 2006 with 73 houses and sold the Ridley site for redevelopment.
