Greenall Whitley & Co. Ltd, Wilderspool Brewery, Wilderspool Causeway, Warrington, Cheshire

Founded 1762 at St Helens. The St Helens brewery was closed in April 1975. See Greenall Whitley (St Helens).

The Warrington (Wilderspool) brewery was established in 1787. See Greenall Whitley (Wilderspool).

Private company registered in October 1880 and public company formed 1952.

In 1990, it closed its remaining breweries at Warrington and Nottingham to become a pub chain, which was later itself bought. As a Pub Co, it acquired the pub estate of Devenish & Co. Ltd in 1993, to add Devenish's 550 houses to its own 1,497 pubs. In 1995, Greenalls took over the Boddington's pub company to raise its estate to over 2,300 pubs. Various sales of parts of the estate followed, and in 1999, Scottish & Newcastle acquired the remainder - about 860 pubs and 61 hotels.
