Gartside's Brookside Brewery Limited, Ashton-Under-Lyne
The Brewery was founded by the late John Gartside in 1830 who commenced business in a very small way at Matley, near Stalybridge. In 1847 the business was removed to the present premises at Jeremy Brook, and which have been enlarged several times during the past few years on account of increased business.
In 1892 the firm was converted into a private limited Company, but in 1898 the present Public Company was formed. The Company own over 300 licensed houses in various parts of the district. The Brewery is fitted up with the most modern plant and is capable of an output of 2,500 barrels per week. The stables are modern built, both from a sanitary and structural point of view and are capable of accommodating 50 or 60 horses. Horse transit is, however, slowly giving way to motor traction.
Electric power and lighting is utilised throughout the whole premises. The employment of PURE AIR during the aeration and cooling process of Beer Wort in the Brewery has long since been proved to be essential in eliminating one of the sources of trouble affecting the keeping properties and other qualities of the finished beer. The whole of the air coming in contact with beer during cooling and fermentation is filtered through an efficient plant recently installed whereby all disease germs (which are always prevalent in the atmosphere) are absolutely eliminated. With every confidence we may justly claim that the beers are produced under conditions which cannot obtain under any other system.
An unlimited supply of well water is procured for all cooling and washing purposes, two excellent bore-holes being situated on the premises. Water is raised from one of these by the novel use of compressed air, lifting the same to large storage tanks capable of holding 40,000 gallons.
Only the finest Barley Malts are exclusively used in this firm's productions. Combined with choicest Kent Hops the flavour and aroma of the beers cannot be excelled.
An important feature is the efficient and modern machinery employed in cleansing and brushing the malt before the same is ground and passed into the mash tun.
Experience has proved that the thorough cooking of the Beer Wort in the production of a SOUND BEER is to be obtained only by the system of boiling under pressure. With this method a temperature considerably above boiling point is produced, and guarantees a certain and reliable result.
Before sending out the finished beer to the customer it is equally important that the casks should be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized. This is carried out in a most effective way by the latest machinery which distributes a fine spray of super-heated water and steam with considerable force over the whole surface of the cask.
Gartsides' Ales are therefore justly HIGH-CLASS, SOUND, PURE AND RELIABLE, and may be obtained on draught or in bottle at all licensed houses owned and served by the Company in the surrounding districts.
