Founded on the 15th July 1982 by landlord Paul Hunt with a purpose built brewery, in a purpose built building, Down Royal was Ireland's first brew pub.
Paul also owned the Newtownards Malting Co which also supplied malt for the [[Hilden Brewing Co]].
SPR equipment was installed and is visible from the bar, hidden behind a 26 foot glass mural.
