Derby Brewery Co. Ltd, Navigation Brewery, 63 Nottingham Road, Derby, Derbyshire.

Navigation Brewery established 1800 and run by Henry Hunt to c.1850. In December 1855 brewery for sale and in 1865 David Paine listed there having been a brewer in Nottingham Road in 1852/57. Then in 1876 Clarke Edward & Co were brewing in Nottingham Road.

Registered May 1893 to acquire the business was registered as H J E Scott and H B Craven.

Acquired by Stretton's Derby Brewery Ltd,who had probably become the owners around 1889. In May 1899 Strettons bought it with over 57 public tied houses and the business was liquidated in 1901. Some buildings survive.

Then in 1876 Clarke Edward & Co were brewing in Nottingham Road. In 1881 Clarke Robert & Co were at 34 Victoria Street and near No 71. In 1884 Thos Clarke & Co maltsters were the owners. The Brewers Journal for 1886 p276 mentions that Thomas, William & Frank Clarke's partnership was dissolved as brewers and w&s. They were also maltsters at Derby, Bedford, York & Beeston.

NB there was also a firm called Clarke Brothers in Bury St Edmunds, but I don't know whether there is any connection.

In December 1855 the Navigation Brewery was for sale and in 1865 David Paine was at the Navigation Brewery, having been listed as brewing in Nottingham Road for 1852/57. However, I am not sure if this was connected. Certainly in 1876 Edward Clarke & Co were brewing in Nottingham Road. In 1881 Robert Clarke & Co were at 34 Victoria Street and near to No71 and the Long Life history of Allied suggests that they were involved with the ownership.

In 1884 Thos Clarke & Co maltsters were the owners. The Brewers’ Journal for 1886 states the partnership dissolved of Thos, William and Frank Clarke as brewers and w&s. They were also maltsters at Derby, Bedford, York and Beeston.

Around 1889 HJE Scott and HB Craven became involved and in May 1893 they registered the business as the Derby Brewery Co, In 1898/99 it was bought by Stretton's Derby Brewery Ltd with 57 pubs, although Long Life mentions 32 pubs and 5 OLs. The business was liquidated in 1901.

In May 1893 the business was registered as the Derby Brewery Co by HJE Scott & HB Craven, who had probably become the owners around1889. Capital £5, 000.

In May 1899 Stretton's Derby Brewery Ltd bought it with 57 pubs, although Long Life mentions 32 pubs and 5 OLs and the business was liquidated in 1901.
