Founded 1866.

Registered 1887 to amalgamate Thomas Daniell & Sons of West Bergholt and Daniell Brothers of Colchester.

Castle Brewery closed by March 1892.

Acquired by Truman, Hanbury & Buxton & Co. Ltd 1958 with 150 tied houses.

Brewery mainly standing, adjacent to the castle.

In 1866, Daniell and Bishop were listed. The brewery which backed onto the ancient castle was built in 1876, with four members of the Daniell family ensuring their initials were inscribed on bricks each with the date 1876, can still be seen on the front elevation at high level. (The initials are ESD, WGD, EOD and TCD).

Up until 1880, the trading name was Daniell Brothers and Crookes, but four years later the Crookes name had been dropped and a new partner, Chaplin, was taken on.

In 1887, on the 4th January, Daniell and Sons of West Bergholt Brewery merged and the firm was then renamed as Daniell Brother and Company Castle Brewery.

At this time the brewery employed 40 employees and had 113 public houses.

This trading name continued to 1958 when taken over by Truman, Hanbury & Buxton & Co. Ltd., London, who then changed the name once more to Daniell and Sons Breweries Ltd.

During the recession years of the early 1930's the company profit in 1931 was only £16,840.

Brewing had ceased at the Castle Brewery as early as 1887 at the time of the Daniell merger, the premises being used as offices and Directors boardroom, parts of which were sold on 7th October, 1957, for £5,600 to B.Mason.

Much of the brewery premises are still intact and still recognisable as a brewery, used by the Resources Department of the Council.
