The brewery was built in 1733 by William Hicks.
Acquired by the Rock Brewery (Brighton) Ltd in 1911 and was later sold to Fremlins Ltd.
Brewery demolished c.1970, but the brewery tap in Black Lion Street was rebuilt in 1974 and survives.
