Brewing commenced 1987 in old [[Lorimer & Clark]] buildings. In 2004 Scottish & Newcastle, having decided to close the Fountain Brewery, took a 30% share and contracted for the brewing of their beers.

Daniel Bernard quarrelled with his brother, John Mackay Bernard and remained at the old Edinburgh Brewery in Canongate.
