Bass Charrington Ltd

Formed in 1967 by the merger of two major brewing groups:

Bass, Mitchells & Butlers Ltd and Charrington United Breweries Ltd

After the merger, the company owned ca. 11,000 pubs.


  • In 1967, they acquired Bent's Brewery Co. Ltd of Liverpool and Stone with 514 public houses. Both breweries closed.
  • They acquired Joule & Sons Ltd of Stone in 1968 with 214 pubs. Brewing ceased September 1972.
  • William Stones Ltd of Sheffield were acquired in 1968 with 257 tied houses. Brewing ceased in 1998.
