Bass Charrington Ltd

Formed in 1967 by the merger of two major brewing groups:


In 1967, they acquired Bent's Brewery Co. Ltd of Liverpool and Stone with 514 public houses. Both breweries closed.

William Hancock & Co. Ltd of Cardiff was acquired in 1968 with 505 tied houses and became Welsh Brewers and then Bass Wales. Hancock's brewery was sold to Brain & Co. Ltd in 1999.

Catterall & Swarbrick of Blackpool was closed in 1971.

In 1973, they opened a massive modern brewery at Preston Brook, Runcorn, but closed it in 1993. See: Bass Charrington Ltd (Runcorn).

John Jeffrey & Co. Ltd, Heriot Brewery, Edinburgh was closed in 1992.

Hope & Anchor Breweries Ltd, Hope Brewery, Sheffield was closed in 1994.
