A Mr Crabb founded this business in 1798 and was later joined by his son as in 1826 the title of the firm was R.H. Crabb and Son ale and porter brewers.

In 1839, Richard H. Crabb and Sons were listed as brewers and maltsters, with Richard Crabb living at Baddow Place. An agreement between Frederick Thomas Veley of Chelmsford and Arthur Curtis Veley and Richard Hartley Crab of Great Baddow, brewer, was for the "copyhold brewery, maltings, messuages, buildings and premises" and sold for £9,000 on 9th October, 1866. Included in this sale were 35 freehold, 2 leashold public houses and one beer shop.

Richard Hartley Crabb was born at Sandon Place in 1820 and inherited the business from his father, also Richard. It was Richard Senior's father who settled in the village in 1798 at which he founded the original brewery. A new brewery was built on the site in 1868, the foundation stone being laid by Henry George Crabb, Frederick Thomas Veley, Arthur C. Veley and Thomas Smee. In 1902, Reginald Watney was managing Director of the Baddow Brewery, but by 1927 the limited company was taken over by Seabrooke & Sons Ltd. Thurrock Brewery, Grays.

The buildings remain extant, the main building with foundation stone are now used as a furniture retail shop, whilst outbuildings and yard are various antique shops. Opposite the imposing three storeyed main building stood the bottling stores, which had a grotesque gargoyle and two circular inset reliefs of members of the Royal Family. This building was demolished and a new one built in 1989, incorporating many of the features of the previous building.
